The Petit Café chain is an eating institution in Beirut. Here’s why: the mango, strawberry and banana smoothie is a solid choice, and ‘strawberry fly’ is an icy energy drink with zing. The bil karaz – a bowl of sweet beef pieces cooked in the cherry marinade – is pleasant enough, but the cheese manakeesh is merely adequate. Desserts are traditionally Lebanese – the kataifi bashta is a dish of cream, fruit and lots and lots of honey, while the chocolate brownie comes nut-laced and sprinkled with coffee beans for extra stimulation. Above average fare is served up with shishas here.
