Rick Wilhite:
Although he may not be as talked about as his Detroit peers and fellow 3 Chairs collaborators Kenny Dixon Jr. and Theo Parrish, there’s no doubting Rick “The Godson” Wilhite’s position as one of the central characters in the city’s house music heritage. The record store was his first step along the way, and after learning the ropes of the vinyl industry via his job at Buy-Rite Music, he set about becoming a shop proprietor in his own right. The House Of Music was his first venture, and up until its closure late last year, he was the owner of Vibes New and Rare Music.
Though his work behind the counter may be a thing of the past, his work behind the mixing desk certainly isn’t. His sporadic sample-heavy singles for KDJ and most recently Stilove4music have become sought after slabs of wax, changing hands for serious amounts of money on sites like Discogs and eBay, yet fans looking to get a slice of Wilhite’s production talent will be able to do so at a much more reasonable rate when he drops his debut solo album in the coming months. The final string to his bow is his skill behind the decks, with his much-refined turntable technique working in tandem with an enviable knowledge of disco, house and techno. He’s also not one to shy away from sharing his wisdom, taking a pre-teen Kyle Hall aside to school him on the finer points of deep house. Read more on Last.fm. Joe Babylon:
San Jose based dj and producer. He was the co-founder of Plug Research. Joe (Babylon) Marougi started off as mobile DJ since 1986 doing house parties in Los Angeles, CA. After gravitating more heavily towards house/techno music, he took a leap of faith along with his good friend and DJ partner Allen Avanessian in 1994 when they bought some recording gear and started Plug Research (record label) up at the loft at Allen’s house. Soon after launching the label, they both became more involved with the underground scene in LA by putting together warehouse parties and other events while hiring Detroit artists such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, Claude Young, Rob Hood and Kenny Larkin to perform as an attempt to bring more awareness of techno’s roots to southern California. Venues for such events ranged from empty warehouses to county fairgrounds and everything in between including the Shrine Auditorium.
Joe handed Plug Research over to Allen in 1998 shortly after getting married and moving to northern california (San Jose). Allen picked up the ball and ran with it “big time” by making Plug Research one of the most respected independent record labels in the electronic scene. Meanwhile, Joe never stopped shopping for records and continued sharpening his music skills. As a result, he has recently put together a promising new label (Roundabout Sounds) with an attractive lineup of tracks and remixers such as Rick Wade, Mike Huckaby, Rick Wilhite, Aaron-Carl, Orlando Voorn, John Tejada and XDB just to name a few (with many more to come!)
